Thursday Thoughts....Trying To Adapt To Change

Happy Thursday Girls!

Hope y'all are having a great week!  I can't believe tomorrow is Friday already...this week is FLYING by!

We have been here in our new home, new state for exactly 3 weeks today!  In some ways it feels like we have been here much longer, and in other ways it still feels pretty new!  I am happy to report that the kids are LOVING it here and have adjusted so well with their new schools!  I was really worried about them.  Olivia struggled with school so much and everyday was a fight back in NC...but holy heck she is so happy and girls...she LOVES going to school everyday!  Jack and AJ are awesome little boys, not because they are my boys, but because they really are just awesome!  They are friendly and outgoing, and they make friends easily!  I was worried about them...they are both in middle school, definitely a tough age to start a new school and make new friends.  By day 3 they were feeling pretty comfortable and had started making some friends.  They are still getting used to the new curriculum and schedules, but they are happy and enjoying school!  Mark started work last week...I love my husband but after him being home for 2 1/2 weeks I was so ready for him to get back to work.  He really seems to enjoy it, and he is confident he made the right career decision!

So with all that, everyone happy, I should be over here jumping for joy, loving life, right???  Well....not so much!  I am missing home BIG time!  It is beautiful here, but it is HOT, and when I say HOT, I don't mean like warm, I mean like mid 90's everyday, with humidity HOT...and I HATE the heat!  So that right there is just having me real depressed these days!  I am also missing Harrison like crazy..now I know he is about to turn 20, and it is really time to cut the cord, I get it, but not even being in the same state as him, not even getting to see him once a week has me really down.  Harrison and I have such an amazing relationship, and I just miss him!  He is happy, thriving, doing fantastic and it makes me so happy, but it doesn't change the fact that I miss him.

I had a routine for the past few years, and I thrive on routine, so right now I am adjusting to my new routine!  I lived in Charlotte for ten years, so it is definitely hard teaching an old dog new tricks:)  I lived in the BEST area of Charlotte, and EVERYTHING was convenient to me.  I could be to 5 Harris Teeters in 4 minutes, I had 2 Targets within 5 miles of my house, a Starbucks pretty much on every corner, and the best mall ever about 12 miles away.  Now I know these are not the most important things in life, but that convenience was AWESOME.  I could tackle lots of things in one day, and still have time at home before the kids even got off the bus.  Here, things are not as convenient..I mean girls it takes me about 30-35 minutes to get to Target...and the mall...well it's no South Park that's for sure!  So now I am getting myself to be more organized, it's no longer convenient to run to Target everyday...and trust me that makes the hubs pretty darn happy!

When we lived in NC, I would drop Olivia off to school around 8:30, and the boys would head to the bus stop around the same time...and then Olivia got off the bus around 4, and the boys got off the bus around 4:45...so I really felt like I had the whole day!  Here, I drop Olivia off to school at 8:20, then I drop the boys to school around 9:15, and I have to be at the bus stop by 2:35 to get Olivia, that hour and a half makes a HUGE difference!

I don't like to complain, and over the past few weeks I have definitely felt like a "Debbie Downer", complaining a lot, so I am really trying to repeatedly tell myself that change isn't always bad, and infact it can be very good.  I know in time, this will start feeling like "home", I will start meeting new people and making new friends, and soon enough I will be in my "groove"...but I would be LYING if I said it is all happening easily for me!

There have been days when sometimes it's just all too much, and I just break down into tears and just cry because I am feeling sad and overwhelmed.  But then I quickly remind myself how blessed and lucky I am.  I shouldn't be complaining about where I live, at least I have a place to live right?  Not only do I have a place to live, I am lucky enough to share my home and life with the most amazing people...my husband and my children.  There is lots of love within my 4 walls, and the 700 mile move certainly didn't change that!

Thank you so much to everyone who reached out to me during the past month, all the words of encouragement have meant so much to me.  I am so thankful for this wonderful community of positive women!

Be sure to check back tomorrow for Friday Favorites!

  2. I can only imagine how difficult it is to move your family and your whole life. And listen, I am a Florida native and I HATE the cold (as in, I was wearing a jacket last night when it was 69 degrees in Central FL), but even I think it's been unseasonably hot here this Nov. You moved in a month of record highs! That said, Olivia being so happy about school would be reason enough for me to smile daily! It's such a blessing to have kids be happy and loving school, because they're there a lot! You'll settle in and adjust to the Florida way of life. Very laid-back, very flip flop, very long summer nights (even in the winter... ;) )

  5. Think of it as an adventure! Every time we have moved, (3 states in less than 10 years)- I like to look up the culture. I like to see what is in the town that locals love. We find a church home, we explore, we pretend we are tourists. It's so much fun finding out the new! It's a pretty good thing that I don't mind moving because we've moved often! We don't have family near by which makes it SO hard, but it has made my husband and I close because we have to rely on each other. It will get better!

  7. Hang in there. Change is hard. I love routine also. I'm happy your kids are doing great. My son is an Olivia and has not liked school since kindergarten. He is a freshman this year. I might have been willing to move to change that! :)

  9. Change is soo hard.. Especially since it is such a big change and happened so fast! I personally think you're doing awesome with everything. I HATE the heat too... Especially with humidity, so I understand how hard that part must be. It can make you tired, have no energy, depressed, etc. Give it a little time.. I think your body will start to get a little more used to it and then it will cool off a little too. Try to keep yourself on a schedule, join a gym, maybe check out a church.. Those are things I always do when moving to a new area (I've moved like 12 times).. Glad to hear the kids are adjusting beautifully! Hang in there!

  11. Sorry to hear the adjustment hasn't come as easy for you. Kids always adapt better than adults. Would love to encourage your family to find a church home. This sense of community and fellowship with others doing life beside you will be good for your soul. Have a good weekend.

  12. I moved ten times in less than two years back in the mid 90's. No joke. Talk about depressed! We moved a lot as a child too and I did not handle that well. I have been in NC 19 years and in the same house for 15 and I pray I never have to move again. That being said, why don't you and your daughter venture out to find maybe a gym, or some sort of group you could join. Did you google where the closest Simon mall is located? Maybe it won't be to far? Also, find a church. There will be lots of activities for the kids and more than likely a womans group as well. Maybe putting Olivia in a gymnastics or cheer or dance class could help you and her meet other moms to arrange play dates, etc. Hopefully the boys will be doing sports there too and you will meet some people that way. Will your DH new job have a holiday party? That would be great!
